What is the significance of the Ebola virus Glycoprotein (GP) in the viral life cycle?

The GP is the only virally expressed protein on the surface of the Ebola virion. It is solely responsible for several critical functions: attaching to host cells, mediating membrane fusion, shielding the viral surface from the host immune system, and maintaining viral stability.
